In this form of hydrofoil surfing, the rider lies prone on a hydrofoil board and paddles using their arms to catch waves and gain momentum. The prone foiling can be pumping foiling, kitesurfing, windsurfing, SUP surfing, and so on.
How does hydrofoil surfing work?
- Board design: Hydrofoil surfboards typically have a long mast attached to the bottom of the board, with a wing or multiple wings at the end of the mast.
- Lift and stability: As the board gains speed, the wings generate lift, causing the board to rise out of the water. The rider is then supported above the water’s surface; the only contact points are the foil and the water.
- Maneuvering: By shifting their weight and adjusting their stance, the rider can control the direction, pitch, and height of the board above the water. The board can carve through the water smoothly, even in small waves or flat water conditions.
